Reflection
AtNorwich, we are continually working to make the University a better place to live, study, and learn. I recently asked my senior staff to reflect on significant changes that were implemented in the last two years which enhance the student experience. I was quite impressed by this list and want to share it with you. Some of the major improvements include:
· Construction of Doyle Hall
· Construction of the Shaw Outdoor Center (to be completed during summer 2012)
· Renovation of Gerard Hall
· Renovation of Wilson Hall
· Renovation of locker rooms
· Increase of data bandwidth
· Renovation of Dewey and Webb computer labs
· Addition of "Lecture Capture" digital systems in two classrooms
· Enabling of tablet access to the data network
· Additional staff to the Commandant's and Dean of Students' offices
· Expansion of Student Activities alcohol and non-alcohol events
· Installation of a new concert-grade Steinway grand piano and a new organ in White Chapel (gifts from donors)
· Creation of the annual Legacy March
· Implementation of an online class registration system
· Utilizing outside vendors to improve cell phone service on campus.
· Introduction of a text book rental program (Over 25 percent of textbooks are now rented)
· Expansion of online offerings for text books so students can order books prior to arrival on campus and have books waiting for them upon arrival
· Re-establishment of the Cadet Uniform Committee which, in turn, led to the replacement of the running suit to a more updated and comfortable style and the replacement of the black jacket
· Establishment of a mail and phone ordering system for laundry, dry cleaning and linen service thereby eliminating the need to wait in line to sign up
· Expansion of menu offerings at the dining hall including Green Mountain showcase featuring local items, bacon Tuesdays, stir fry Wednesdays, salad garden toss Thursdays, Sunday Sundae bar, ultimate taco bar, Caesar salad bar, pasta pronto, monthly recipe from home contest etc.
It is very easy to look around the University and see all that needs to be done. At the same time, it is important stop and reflect upon our accomplishments. Norwich spent over $14 million on the items listed above.
While the University has made substantial investments of time and money to develop our campus, the need for improvement is constant. I am committed to continually looking at ways that we might be able to improve our students' experience while at Norwich. As part of this commitment, I welcome your feedback and input.
Take pride and ownership in your University. Help us to enhance your Norwich experience, both inside and outside of the classroom.
